Small Bowel Obstruction Causes

Bowel obstruction is also referred to as intestinal blockage and is present with various symptoms such as abdominal pain, abdominal distension, vomiting and constipation depending upon the extent of the obstruction. Bowel Obstruction is basically divided into two types: small bowel obstruction and large bowel obstruction. In small bowel obstruction the pain tends to occur at the middle of the abdomen and it’s cramping in nature. Spasms only last for a few minutes and generally the vomiting takes place prior to constipation. In large bowel obstruction the spasms tend to last longer as compared to SBO and the pain occurs at the lower region of the abdomen. There isn’t as much vomiting as in SBO and the constipation tends to occur quite early. Both SBO and LBO have different causes and those will be explained now. The major cause of small bowel obstruction is adhesions that occur due to prior abdominal surgeries. Other causes are Hernias, Cohn’s disease, benign or malignant Neoplasm’s, Ovules, Ischemic strictures and Intestinal atresia. The primary causes of large bowel syndrome are Neoplasm’s, Hernias, Inflammatory bowel disease, Adhesions due to medicines, Constipation, Fecal impaction, Intestinal pseudo obstruction and Diverticular disease also known as Benign strictures. Bowel obstruction may also occur due to hardening of the waste as it causes difficulty in its elimination. Changes in both food habits and water also results in bowel syndrome sometimes. Whenever there are some changes in the inner wall of the abdomen, then also bowel syndrome occurs. This happens very rare but can happen.

Mostly small bowel obstruction leads to severe constipation and in some cases even diarrhea, so it will be foolish to ignore it.
